Description
A POLYNESIAN MYTH ABOUT HOW HINA BECAME THE TRAVELERS’S PROTECTOR
Hina occupied all his days beating the tapa (plant tissue created from the bark) to weave a beautiful white fiber. She carried out this task with such vigor that Ta’aroa, the Lord of All, found the noise unbearable and sent a messenger asking her to be quiet. She refused and carried on.
Ta’aroa went on a rampage and ordered his messenger to go and beat her with his mighty club. The blow was so violent that Hina was launched up to the moon.
From there she could observe the earth and could also protect travelers, illuminating their path during the night.
The jewels of the collection MITI are inspired by mythical characters or events.
